While juvenile and full of incredibly hilarious moments of irreverent, grotesque, and slapstick comedy, this strange love story squanders the talent in front of the camera and many opportunities to make a coherent, worthwhile point. Despite a funny cast and witty writing, several scenes are painfully incompetent and remarkably stupid.

This spoof on all modern police action flicks is unbelievably fun, always completely deadpan, and ridiculously hilarious. Nicholas Angel is an outstanding London police officer who gets transferred to a small village for making his colleagues look incompetent. The action sequences are amazing, the humor irreverent, and the story entertaining.

A classic novel by Gabriel García Márquez is adapted into a film by a director that doesn’t seem to get it. The cast is talented enough and the cinematography and set design are absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, the makeup and costuming aren’t and lots of poignant moments seem clunky and distracted.

Grade: C+.
