Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz star in this Oscar-winning thriller about a man digging into the conspiracy behind the murder of his activist wife in Kenya. The story is very intelligently written and the acting is magnificent. This picture is a real nailbiter, full of intrigue and unexpected plot twists.

Grade: A-.

If there was ever a testament to the talent of a young musician, this album is it. With a stunning group of bebop stars beside him, Clifford Brown throws down the gauntlet with a virtuosic set of standards and originals, full of unforgettable and stunning improvisation and absolute musical perfection.

Grade: A++.

Ken Peplowski – It’s A Lonesome Old Town (1995)

Ken Peplowski is a talented reed player, doubling on clarinet and tenor saxophone. With a smoking rhythm section and guest stars like Marian McPartland, Charlie Byrd, and Tom Harrell, he struts his stuff on a wide variety of tunes. This nice, easy-going set is easily accessible for any listener.

Big, quiet Max is an outcast among his classmates. A physically-challenged intellect, Kevin the Freak, moves in next door. The two outsiders become fast friends in this unexpectedly good buddy picture. The script is wonderful, the tension palpable, the acting first-rate, and the story full of exciting adventure.

Grade: A-.

Chocolat (1988)

France is a girl who lived in northern Cameroon during the French colonization in the 50s. This glacial picture, mostly one large flashback surrounding her family and their servant, tiptoes along the story. The characters are compelling, the acting is good, but the film feels far longer than it is.

Grade: C.

Lonesome Dove (1989)

Without much opportunity left in dusty Lonesome Dove, Texas, two army buddies, played by Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall, round up a crew, wrangle a herd of cattle, and strike out for Montana. This epic mini-series follows the difficult journey, through treachery and tragedy, to a bittersweet conclusion.

Grade: A.

Legends of the Fall (1994)

Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt lead an extraordinary cast in this epic Oscar-winning story set in Montana around World War I. So many spectacular acting performances fill this masterpiece. Beautifully filmed against the breath-taking Rocky Mountains, this picture has it all — action, romance, drama, and great characters.

A few centuries after the collapse of our civilizations, the United States has fragmented into group of small countries with few artifacts from ancient times left, except the collapsing remains of roadways and buildings. This adventure trudges in places, but is a good read nonetheless — the story of a great journey.

Billy Elliot (2000)

Billy Elliot lives with his working class family in northern England. While his brother and father are on strike from the local coal mine, Billy discovers a ballet class and becomes passionate about becoming a dancer. While sometimes too campy, this triumphant, feel-good story is well-acted and enjoyable.

This thrilling story shows how the obsession of one man and the support of his friends changed cycling.
