Kirsten Dunst delivers a stunning performance in front of an astonishing cast as Claire, a new bride who confronts her deep depression in the face of the impending destruction of Earth by a giant blue planet. Lars von Trier wrote a thought-provoking script and gave us an unforgettable experience.

Prince wrote, directed, starred in, and wrote the music for this audacious groundbreaking picture that pits him at odds with rival band, The Time, his own dissatisfied group, his self-destructive, dysfunctional family, his spot on the stage at First Avenue, and his romantic interest, who’s chasing her own career.

Grade: A+.

Gravity (2013)

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in this space thriller about two astronauts who survive an accident in low Earth orbit in which a piece of debris destroys their shuttle and leaves them adrift in space. The explosive action sequences make this completely believable disaster picture a gripping good time.

Grade: A.

This British miniseries gives us a glimpse of a slightly off-kilter future using close-at-hand technological advances that skew the world in sometimes ominous ways. The writing and acting here are both first rate. Some stories are hard to watch, but they’re always thought-provoking and completely engrossing.

Grade: A+.

World War Z (2013)

Despite the title of this action-adventure zombie disaster picture, it bears no resemblance to the best-selling Max Brooks novel. Brad Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a UN employee and certified bad-ass, who is enlisted to stop the zombie apocalypse, which involves touring the world and constantly defying death.

Grade: B-.

In this smart independent British science fiction thriller, everyone has an inborn frequency that determines what they can achieve in life. Zak, an ultra-low, and Marie, an ultra-high, cause strange effects in the world when they’re in each other’s presence and inevitably fall in love with each other.

Steven Spielberg directs this imaginative fantasy in which Peter Pan has grown up and forgotten his Neverland adventures until, somehow, Captain Hook returns and kidnaps Peter’s children. Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, and Julia Roberts star in this incredibly fun return to childhood, full of whimsy, hilarious moments, and amazing performances.

Grade: A-.

Josh Radnor directs and stars in this endearing independent film about a thirty-something guy, Jesse, who goes back to his Ohio alma mater to attend the retirement party of his favorite professor and becomes smitten with a sophomore, Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen), and befriends a sensitive loner, Dean (John Magaro).

Grade: B+.

Q’orianka Kilcher stars as Princess Ka‘iulani — daughter of a Hawaiian Princess and a Scottish businessman — who is sent to a Victorian English boarding school for her education and returns to her homeland to try to prevent the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii and its annexation by American sugar interests.

In this second installment of Peter Jackson three-part adaptation of The Hobbit, our intrepid adventurers seek help from elves as they’re chased mercilessly by orcs. The quest to reach Lonely Mountain is depicted with the usual humor, fast and intricate action sequences, and a patient but extremely deadly dragon.

Grade: A-.
