Robyn Davidson set off in 1977 to cross the desert from Alice Springs, Australia, to the Indian Ocean, with four camels and a dog. In this biopic about the adventure, Mia Wasikowska portrays her against the gorgeous and stark backdrop of the desert wilderness, assisted occasionally by generous Aboriginal guides.

Grade: A+.

This indie romantic comedy features a heartfelt script and good acting performances by Alison Brie, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr, Geoffrey Arend, and Mark Webber. Sisters Beth and Sarah are dating two guys in an indie rock band, until an unexpected proposal sends Sarah fleeing to find out what she wants.

Grade: B.

In this sleepy, independent slice-of-life teen comedy, a group of college freshmen return home to their small Pennsylvania town for Thanksgiving and explore old friendships and make new ones. This picture has its heart in the right place, but the pace trudges and we’ve seen this story before.

Grade: B-.

Shane Carruth, who wrote and directed Primer, returns with a new psychological thriller as inventive and engrossing as his virtuosic debut. Amy Seimetz delivers an unforgettable performance as Kris, whose unwilling body is used to incubate a parasite, and, with Carruth’s character, Jeff, shows us startling vulnerability and deep melancholy.

This fascinating documentary follows Raf Simons, the new artistic director of Christian Dior, as he prepares his first haute couture show in Paris. His confident handling of large groups of designers and his ability to make good decisions quickly can inspire even those of us who know nothing about fashion.

In this quiet, slice-of-life drama, a Southern newlywed leaves her neglectful husband after a personal tragedy sends her into a spiritual journey to find herself. Paul Harrill wrote and directed this beautiful character study, his first feature film, and Ashley Shelton breathes introspective humility and grace into Peggy.

This masterpiece fantasy adventure follows an annoyed teenager, Sarah, who has to solve a Labyrinth owned by the Goblin King Jareth to get her baby brother back. Directed by Jim Henson and starring David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, and a plethora of muppet creatures, this picture is perfectly cast and filmed.

Grade: A+.

Miles Teller and JK Simmons lead a phenomenal cast in this masterpiece, starring as a young drummer working through an elite jazz school and his uncompromising and frequently vicious bandleader. The tour-de-force performances and perfect script in this unforgettable feature turn this chaotic drama into an immediate favorite.
