Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, and Liev Schreiber star in this adaptation of the W Somerset Maugham novel about a epidemiologist fighting a cholera epidemic in China, his unfaithful wife, and her lover, a British consul. The backdrop, shot on location in China, is gorgeous and the acting performances first-rate.

Toby Jones leads an exquisite cast in this sadly overlooked drama about Truman Capote’s research on In Cold Blood, which was released on the heels of the Oscar-winning masterpiece Capote. Sandra Bullock turns in a surprisingly confident performance as Harper Lee. This engrossing telling is well worth a look.

Newcomer Jodie Whittaker plays Jessie, providing a vulgar, common counterbalance to the cultured thespian.

In this melancholy film set on the Palouse region of Northern Idaho, a depressed teenager at odds with his dysfunctional family meets a troubled girl, who is almost as morose as he is. While the acting was solid enough, given the moping script, the pessimism and hopelessness here is inescapable.
